Joint Commission Environment of Care (EC) Standards require organizations to inspect, test, and maintain medical equipment and utility systems at appropriate intervals to help reduce instances of failure. But how should an organization determine the appropriate maintenance methods and intervals? Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid agreed to allow organizations to use their own documented experience to determine maintenance intervals for some equipment, rather than just following manufacturers' guidelines. This article explains what organizations must do to set up these alternate interval schedules and remain in compliance.
